Joey Castillo is a software and hardware engineer, and the Technologist in Residence at Cornell Tech in New York City. He is also the founder of Oddly Specific Objects, an electronics practice that publishes open hardware designs and manufactures open hardware products in the wearable and hobbyist space. His “Sensor Watch” project, a board swap for a classic Casio wristwatch, has sold thousands of units, and his “Open Book” project, an open hardware e-book reader, has been assembled by hundreds of enthusiasts worldwide. He’s presented talks and workshops at Hackaday’s Remoticon, Crowd Supply’s Teardown conference and the Open Hardware Summit. His practice is grounded in designing useful objects that people can understand and in some cases even build themselves, empowering users to make objects that work on their own terms.
