Open Hardware Creators in Academia Fellow

Alwin Darren Dagdag

Alwin is a chemist currently exploring the applications of open source hardware as alternatives to expensive proprietary technology used in research laboratories. He is a holder of a BSc in Chemistry and Materials Science and Engineering from the Ateneo de Manila University (Philippines). Through internships, he has gained experience in assembling and troubleshooting open source designs of syringe pumps, bioreactors, and fraction collectors for laboratory use. He is also interested in learning about how open source hardware can be used to make certain hobbies or skills accessible and affordable, such as an open source espresso scale for coffee brewing, or open source printed circuit board designs for custom mechanical keyboards.

In general, Alwin enjoys any activity that involves tinkering, which can range from assembling a simple cabinet to building impulse-bought model kits. Currently, he is trying to learn how to design and fabricate a driver board to power a microblower for microscale fluid flow.
